BEGINNING COGNITIVE ACCESSIBILITY IN EDUCATIONAL CENTERS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF BARAKALDO

Since 2017 the Foundation Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities of the Basque Country thanks to the funding of the Barakaldo municipality council carries out the “Educational project in the field of functional, cultural, sexual and generational diversity” aimed primarily at raising awareness about intellectual and / or developmental disabilities and facilitating more accessible spaces for all people.

One of the activities carried out has been the implementation of cognitive accessibility (AC) in several of the educational centers of the municipality (as of today 11 of the 25 in the municipality). Through a previous analysis of the needs to adapt the environment together with the professional team of the centers and basic training in the field of CA, various tools have been provided to the educational centers that facilitate the easy understanding of the spaces, the structure and information.

In turn, we have created accessible libraries in each of the schools made up of 3 types of books:

• Easy Read (ER).
• Stories with pictograms.
• Diversity awareness books.

Games with pictograms have also been provided to work on different instrumental skills from day to day.

Finally, we have provided different materials such as calendars, signage maps, pictogram deck, standards, QA guides, sign and kinesthetic manuals, pictogram boxes, meal notebooks, etc.

Currently, we also have a wayfinding start in the schools of CEP MUKUSULUBA LHI and CEP GURUTZETA LHI.
