Project description:
Since 2008, the Malaga City Council has promoted a pioneering project at the national level in terms of universal accessibility. This project is characterized by giving a global response to communication and cognitive accessibility in all areas (information, signaling of spaces, communication, procedures, tourism, …). From the first moment, ARASAAC has collaborated with said council designing and providing the necessary pictograms to “give a voice” to people who need these visual aids in their daily lives.
- Signaling of spaces. More than 38 municipal offices have accessible signage that has panels with pictograms to facilitate cognitive accessibility, as well as high contrast, relief and Braille.
- Electronic information posts. These accessible information posts are placed in the Social Services centers and operate via a touch screen. The different menus contain easy-to-read text, pictograms and videos in sign language in order to redirect the user to the information they need. The displays are also adapted with high contrast for the visually impaired.
- Communication books. These books are available to users in certain places and spaces (shopping centers, restaurants, taxis, …). Through them, users who can express their wishes, needs or demands.
- Communication book to understand and use municipal services for citizens.
In 2012, Malaga City Council received theAccessibility Award at the ‘Telefónica Ability Awards’ for the development of this Strategic Accessibility Plan and the Accessibility Ordinance of the municipality.
From ARASAAC, we convey our congratulations for this great work and our support to continue carrying out this work that promotes the right to communication and accessibility for all citizens of the municipality and visitors.
To carry out this initiative, pictograms from the Aragonese Portal for Augmentative and Alternative Communication ARASAAC, owned by the Government of Aragon, have been used.
