Project description:
The CRA Alta Ribagorza proposed to carry out for this 2017/2018 academic year an inclusive practice of signage with ARASAACpictograms of the schools of Benasque, Castejón de Sos, Cerler, Laspaúlesand Sahún with the aim of eliminating communication barriers by making spaces accessible for all.
Based on the document prepared by the Specialized Team on Physical Disability of Aragon“Pictograph an educational center“, the project has been adapted for all the grouped rural centers and to the needs of each of the schools.
Taking into account the legal framework that regulates inclusion and attention to diversity, the project focuses on the principle of accessibility and the universal design of environments, goods, products and services related to educational processes, which guarantees participation and the learning of all students.
Therefore, the objectivesset have been the following:
- Improved cognitive accessibility to raise awareness among all people.
- Orientation and location of spaces and services within an educational center.
- Improved signage and increased visual information.
- Favor the autonomy, independence and inclusion of the entire educational community.
The project pursues an active participation of the entire educational community: teachers, students, families and school personnel.
For this, the collaboration of all teachers has been necessaryto identify the most common or important scenariosand movements. It is necessary that all the dependencies of the center have their corresponding pictogram next to the sign with the name and at a medium height, visible to the child. To do this, the templates provided by the Aragón Specialized Physical Disability Team have been used and we will adapt them to the different spaces of the schools.
Once the spaces of the schools have been marked, a guided tour has been carried out for the students to go through the school center and learn to associate the pictograms with the different rooms. Students are also explained the use and functions of augmentative and alternative communication systems (SAAC) and, specifically, the uses of center signage. In this way, they see first-hand the benefits of cognitive accessibility.
In each of the classrooms, the tutor and the students organize the classroom spaces. The classroom pictograms respond to the educational needs derived from the methodologies used in the classroom, so it is very useful to establish daily routines. Each action must have its pictogram and the teachers use it while guiding the daily activity of the classroom: they are the pictograms of routines.
Pictograms are also used to establish the temporal organization of activities in classrooms: structuring the days and activities. In this way, we can transform time into something “visible” through visual calendars and facilitate the anticipation of the activities to be carried out.
Throughout this process, the assessment of the entire educational community is considered essential. Therefore, surveys will be conducted with teachers, students, families and school personnel. With the information collected, a proposal to improve the project will be made.
From ARASAACwe want to convey our support and our congratulations for this great project to the entire educational community of the CRA Alta Ribagorza and convey our support and support so that the project continues and spreads to other centers.
