What is AsTeRICS Grid?
AsTeRICS Grid is a free and customizable multiplatform dynamic communicator that allows the use of pictograms, images and orthographic signs to facilitate communication and participation for everybody. As a support product for communication, AsTeRICS Grid brings together a series of characteristics that makes it an essential tool to adapt the communicator to the person, taking into account their age, interests, abilities and the social environment in which they operate and participate.
AsTeRICS Grid allows the use of assisted natural language as a methodology to favor language through modeling, where the adult interacts with the user of AAC, supporting their oral language in the pictograms that are presented in the communication system that we have selected.

The dynamic communicator AsTeRICS Grid was initially developed at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, within the ToRaDes project, funded by the City of Vienna (project number 18-04).
From 2019 to 2023 the development of AsTeRICS Grid was carried out within the project ‘Knowledge Hub for Accessible Technologies’ (WBT), funded by the City of Vienna (project 26-02). From 2024 to 2025 some specific AsTeRICS Grid developments were funded by a netidee project funded by the Internet Foundation Austria (Call 18). Since September 2024, AsTeRICS Grid is further developed in the project ‘Inclusion through digital augmentative and alternative communication’ at the UAS Technikum Wien, funded by the City of Vienna (project number 38-09).

Since 2022, the Aragonese Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication ARASAAC collaborates with AsTeRICS Grid, providing advice on the development of the application and facilitating the use of the ARASAAC API, which allows the search of pictograms in real time and the use of the same customisation options that are used on the ARASAAC website.
